Brief description of event
As part of the 16th International Forum on Food and Nutrition Security (FISANUT) and the 10th Nutrition Chair, under the theme “Clinical Nutrition in the Era of Environmental Health,” and in commemoration of World Food Day 2026 with the motto “Innovate Today to Nourish Tomorrow,” a Pre-Congress Event will be held to foster dialogue and reflection on current challenges linking nutrition, food security, and environmental determinants of health. In alignment with these objectives, the pre-congress joins the activities of the International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week 2026, promoting awareness about the health impacts of lead exposure and the importance of preventive actions to protect vulnerable populations, particularly children. Since its first edition in 2011, and following its integration with the Nutrition Chair in 2018, FISANUT has established itself as a neutral platform for dialogue among academia, civil society, government, and citizens, bringing together multidisciplinary perspectives and evidence-based solutions to address food and nutrition security challenges. This edition is organized by the Division of Health Sciences of the University of Guanajuato, León Campus, and the University Observatory for Food and Nutrition Security of the State of Guanajuato (OUSANEG)..

The event will focus on moving from detection to prevention and will provide families with clear, practical and evidence-based information about childhood lead exposure, blood lead testing and clinical follow-up, potential environmental sources of exposure, and measures that can be taken immediately to reduce exposure at home and in the community. The programme will combine short presentations with practical educational activities and an extended discussion with families. Particular attention will be given to children, pregnancy and early childhood. The event will bring together paediatric and environmental health professionals, primary care professionals, community representatives, researchers and other stakeholders involved in protecting children's health. Uganda Lead Safety Roundtable 2026 for Data, Solutions and Action for a Lead-Free Uganda

Start date
18.10.2026

End date
20.10.2026

Brief description of event
Uganda Lead Safety Roundtable 2026 is a national multi-stakeholder dialogue convened to examine the growing challenge of lead exposure and lead poisoning in Uganda, strengthen the evidence base, and identify practical pathways for prevention and action. Lead exposure is a serious but preventable public health and environmental challenge. It can occur through multiple pathways, including contaminated paint, soil, dust, water, industrial activities, informal recycling and the unsafe handling and recycling of lead-containing products such as used lead-acid batteries. Children and women of child-bearing age are particularly vulnerable to its harmful effects. Despite the potential risks, there is a need for stronger, accessible and coordinated Uganda-specific data to understand where lead exposure is occurring, who is most affected, what the major sources are, and how communities, government, businesses and civil society can respond effectively. The Uganda Lead Safety Roundtable 2026 will bring together government institutions, researchers, health professionals, environmental experts, civil society organisations, academia, industry representatives, waste and recycling actors, development partners and affected communities to: Map the evidence: What data currently exists on lead exposure and poisoning in Uganda, and where are the major evidence gaps? Understand sources and hotspots: What are the major sources and pathways of lead exposure across Uganda? Strengthen data systems: How can Uganda improve lead testing, monitoring, reporting, research and public access to data? Share practical solutions: What interventions are already working, and what can be scaled at community, district and national levels? Strengthen prevention: How can Uganda reduce exposure through better regulation, safer production, responsible waste management and public awareness? Protect vulnerable communities: How can children, workers, informal recyclers and communities living near potential sources of contamination be better protected? Define a way forward: What commitments, partnerships and policy actions are needed to build a coordinated national response? The roundtable will move beyond raising awareness to develop a practical action agenda for lead safety in Uganda, including priorities for research and data generation, policy and regulatory action, community-level interventions, responsible industry practices and collaboration among key stakeholders.

What type of activity do you plan to organize for this year’s ILPPW?

From Local Evidence to Community Action: Raising Awareness and Understanding Public Perceptions on Lead Exposure in Tanzania

Start date
18.10.2026

End date
24.10.2026

Brief description of event
Networking for Society Development Organization (NESODO) will conduct a zero-budget community awareness and engagement campaign during International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week 2026 under the theme “From Detection to Prevention.” The campaign will build on NESODO’s previous LEEP-supported work in Mwanza, including community and stakeholder engagement and evidence generated through testing of paints and selected consumer products. During 18–24 October 2026, NESODO will share evidence-based awareness messages through social media and community networks on lead exposure, its potential sources, health risks, particularly for children and other vulnerable groups, and practical actions for prevention. The campaign will also include a voluntary online community perception and awareness survey to understand what people reached through the campaign know, believe and would like to learn about lead exposure and safer products. The survey findings will be summarized as community feedback, with clear acknowledgement that the survey is not a nationally representative population study. NESODO will use the findings to identify information gaps and community perspectives that can inform future awareness, stakeholder engagement and lead exposure prevention activities. Key findings will be shared with relevant stakeholders and partners to support continued dialogue and a practical way forward for lead exposure prevention in Tanzania.

What type of activity do you plan to organize for this year’s ILPPW?

  • Social media activity: NESODO will conduct a week-long public awareness campaign through its existing social media and community communication networks, sharing evidence-based messages on lead exposure, its sources, health risks and practical prevention measures.
  • Advocacy: The campaign will promote continued action on lead exposure prevention by highlighting community awareness needs, sharing lessons from NESODO’s previous lead-related work, and encouraging continued engagement among relevant stakeholders.
  • Media engagement: NESODO will share campaign messages and key lead prevention information with relevant media contacts and networks to help broaden public awareness and encourage wider discussion on lead exposure prevention in Tanzania.
